I had the good fortune of meeting Ed Lewis from Enjoy Handplanes at the Surfing Arts, Sciences and Issues Conference in San Diego this past weekend. Enjoy Handplanes was one of many companies represented at the conference who are repurposing foam, neoprene, and other surf-related materials otherwise destined to spend half-lives decaying in local landfills.
[Enjoy Handplanes’] mission is to keep broken boards and manufacturing waste from the landfills while creating products that are fun to use and environmentally responsible.
The roots of each Enjoy Handplane are enough to make any eco wave glider proud: old foam from broken boards or ruined blanks, with handles made from used wetsuit neoprene, and glassed with Entropy Bio Epoxy.
What really surprised me was how light the handplane actually is, and with a variety of shapes to choose from, enthusiasts can easily build their own quiver of swallow, squash, roundpin, and diamond tails.

Looking forward to giving this beauty a go at the Wedge this Summer. Mahalos Ed!
